O'shannassy Aqueduct Trail - Cycling The Yarra Valley
The O'Shannassy Aqueduct Trail in my opinion is one of top 5 recreational rides from located within 90 minutes of Melbourne.
What makes the O'Shannassy Trail so special is that in many ways it's a natural extension of the hugely popular Warburton Rail Trail.
Riding the Warburton Rail Trail from Lilydale towards Warburton gives the rider amazing views of the Yarra Ranges National Park, however it's the O'Shannassy Trail that allows trail users to get up close and personal with the Mountain Ash forest within the park.
This forest has been protected for nearly 100 years and in many sections, trail users are riding under the full canopy of the forest that is teeming with native animals and birdlife.
From a historical perspective the trail also has it's own unique story to tell, with the trail following the old maintenance road of the O'Shannassy Aqueduct, which was built between 1911 and 1914. In some sections the aqueduct is still well preserved and riders can view old workers huts and machinery along the route.
If you are visiting Victoria's famous Yarra Valley and you only have one day to explore it's cycling trails then I highly recommend you ride the Warburton Rail Trail beginning at Seville Station and incorporate the O'Shannassy Trail into your ride. The final destination for both trails is Warburton, however the final 4 kilometres of the rail trail from Millgrove to Warburton is a non event compared to the O'Shannassy Trail.
